The Gourmet Food

Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru

The Gourmet Food by M.K Ahmed and Ceekay group, is a retail project outside the airport terminal of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The project in one of the largest outlets of the FMCG based chain M.K Retail and F&B chain Ceekay Group. The brief given for the project was that the design would have to maximize space, look good, and work well for the numerous activities that were to take place within the building and be constructed within a 60 day time period.

The solution was to create a skin that would be erect-able within a short period of time, a skin that would not just protect the merchandise and the users from the weather conditions outside but also perform the task of communicating to the passengers who rush in or out of the terminal building as to what this “Gourmet Food” about. Treated Pine wood slats cut to size were employed to clad the facade from bottom to top with a half-inch gap between each 4 inch wide slat. This gap is meant to allow light from inside to seep out while creating a sense of suspense for the passer-by as to what the building holds inside. These gaps also allow a very lively facade to exist amidst the millions of flat faced-outlets around it.

The skin also has cut-outs In the shape of snacks and beverage cups that allow clear communication to the passengers as to what the building is about. This uniquely designed facade has enabled more and more people to walk into the building relative to other places which rely on a name-board alone for communicating their purpose.
